Job Description :
POSITION: Sr. Geospatial Programmer

LOCATION: USDAís South Building, 1400 Independence Ave, SW, Washington DC 20250 (Smithsonian Metro Stop)

This is a contract position with the USDA International Production Assessment Division (IPAD), a part of the Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS). IPADís mission is to produce the most objective and accurate assessment of global agricultural production and the conditions affecting food security in the world. The work includes utilizing satellite imagery to assess the impact of natural disasters and monitor crop production around the globe.

Perform expert level software development and engineering tasks related to the processing of digital imagery from earth satellites, weather, satellite derived data and other geospatial data as required by geospatial decision support systems or analysts.
Skills & Qualifications :
Solid software development in Java for the processing satellite imagery and development of geospatial data. SQL and database programming skills for workflow development is required.
Familiarity with at least one software package for geospatial programming, preferably Geotools
Capable of using and modifying open source software.
Familiar with satellite remote sensing, weather, satellite data, data quality control, and algorithm development. Capable of handling various satellite, weather and satellite derived data formats: (GeoTIF, binary, ASCII, GRIB, NetCDF, HDF, etc.)
Experience with applications being applied to agriculture or natural resource data modeling is a plus.
Cloud experience is preferred.
Ability to pass a government agency investigation which requires US Citizenship or Permanent Residency.

Minimum 5 years of programming experience with Bachelorís degree or 4 years with an advanced degree.
